When someone posts new stories on Instagram, their profiles are circled in various colors. These colors indicate how long ago the story was posted. One is the pride rainbow ring which indicates that the person celebrates the pride of the month.
The blue ring indicates the person has recently posted a story, while the green ring indicates they have changed the story settings to ‘Close friends’. A double ring means the person has added borders to their profile picture, while a grey circle means you’ve seen all of that person’s stories. The red circle indicates that the person has created a story but you have not seen the story.
Why Are Some Instagram Profiles Circle In Color?
Instagram profiles are circles in color if the user has recently posted a story. If users see a profile without a colored ring, it means that the person hasn’t posted a story recently. Tapping on a profile picture with a colored ring will allow users to view the story that the person has posted.

Colorful Ring Around Instagram Profile Picture: Mean
Instagram has added several new rings to indicate some special conditions of particular stories. Similarly, to celebrate pride month (June), Instagram has added an amazing feature of a rainbow ring on its Instagram story.
Initially, the app had red, grey, and green circles, but the rainbow Instagram story feature has been added by the makers of the app to show support for Pride month and related topics. Just like the other rings, the rainbow circle surrounds the profile picture on Instagram.
Steps To Follow:
- To get a rainbow ring on Instagram first open the story-adding feature on your Instagram.
- Select the picture from your gallery that you want to post on your story.
- Open the sticker section of the Instagram story, and use any of the stickers on the picture you want to post.
- If you use any one of these stickers you will be able to use the rainbow ring around your profile picture.
- Instagram has provided many stickers that anyone can use. Adding this sticker to your story will enable the rainbow ring effect. As you can see from the screenshot, Instagram reports that these stickers will turn the story ring into a rainbow.

What Does the Grey Circle Mean on Instagram?
Instagram also has a “grey ring” feature that indicates you’ve already seen the content. The person’s profile image will be in either grey, black, or faded if you touch it, which means you’ve watched all their stories. After someone posts a story on Instagram, their profile will be circled in color after you watch all of their stories. The color of the circle will turn grey.
There is one condition: if you have not seen all the content in someone’s story, it will not turn grey. Their profile will still be circled in color. Open their story and tap on the right side of your screen to see the next piece of content. When someone posts a new story, their profile picture will turn grey to let you know.
The Instagram Red Circle Around the Profile Picture – Mean
As mentioned before, your profile picture will get a colorful ring around it when you create a story. This ring indicates that a new story has been created. The person whose profile picture or name has a red empty circle on it has posted a new story that you haven’t seen yet. After posting an Instagram story, the red ring around the profile will only appear for 24 hours. After that, the story will disappear. But, if you visit someone’s Instagram story, the red circle will turn into a grey circle.
