What causes audio Issues in the Discord Screen Share Feature?

When you share your screen for a Discord call and there’s no audio, it can be very frustrating. It’s crucial to identify what the issue may be when it’s happened so that we can get back to business as usual instead of wasting time trying to fix it if you’re not able to do anything.

One factor that could have contributed to these errors is people downloading the file directly off Github and running it without any modifications or customizations. In cases like this, when one just downloads a project and runs it as is, it may not be able to run in MP3 format because of write permission restrictions. We recommend having users download files through methods like BitBucket and avoid issues related with permissions by manually unzipping the compressed file (you can read more about other options here).

Audio Feature in Screen Share is still in the preliminary phase

The audio sharing in screen share for Google Hangouts is relatively a new feature and will take some time to get stable. It seems like Google isn’t quite finished with it just yet because the last few updates have been pretty unstable.

Outdated or Bad Audio Drivers

Most of the audio sharing errors have been resolved by updating the audio drivers. It is likely caused due to faults and old versions of your audio drivers. Since Discord issues regular updates for their application, it’s possible that your screen share won’t work because the configurations in the application and drivers don’t match up. Our technical experts recommend using fresh installation of latest version of the driver to fix this issue.

Not Allowing Administrative Access

Discord screen-sharing uses a full-screen display which can be problematic when sharing with peers, especially on modern operating systems that have firewalls installed for security purposes. However this only creates issues if one person does not have administrative access to their machine. Granting someone else administrative access allows them to screen share with you.

Incompatible Applications

The fact is that there are quite a few apps that conflict with Discord for reasons that are beyond our understanding. As a result, the sound of Discord when you have the screen share on doesn’t work. The best solution for this is to close all applications in your computer that are unnecessary and not required in any way while you’re running Discord.

Discord No Route Error

Discord provides real-time text and voice communications for gamers. If a user is experiencing issues getting through to the voice channel on a team server, there may be one of two issues at play. For starters, if a user is using a VPN or firewall to limit data transfers, this may cause the connection to drop out. Alternatively, in this instance information security is not related to it but often some users have older versions of Discord which conflict with newer systems and thus open up many security holes, as they are outdated and therefore susceptible to hacking due to their vulnerabilities.

Antivirus or Firewall Blocking Discord Connectivity

Ideally, when you’re managing your own Discord server (or multiple servers) in a team environment, it’s best if everyone knows each other as well for an even smoother collaboration when/if there is ever an issue.

Now before we jump into troubleshooting, please make sure you have all the credentials required for logging back on to Discord. Resetting the application or granting administrative access may require you to reenter your credentials.

How to fix/troubleshoot Discord Screen Share Audio Not Working Issue?

Fix 1: Make sure Discord Is Updated to Latest Version:

You need to make sure that you have the most recent version of Discord installed on your computer. To ensure this manually:

  1. Open Discord
    2. Look for Discord icon in the system tray.
    3. Right-Click the icon and select ‘Check for Updates

If you’ve tried the above steps and while Discord Screen Share No Audio still happens, try other troubleshooting solutions below:

Fix 2: Add the desired program to your Game Activity:

  1. Open Discord Window and click on the User Settings Icon at the bottom.

2. Select the settings for ‘Game Activity‘ on the right panel under ‘Gaming Settings’ column.

3. If the game/application you’re trying to share is not included in the list, click on “Add it”.

4. In the search bar, search for the application/game you’re willing to stream with audio and add them. Once the application or game has been added, restart discord and try the screen sharing.

Fix 3: Check Voice & Video settings of Discord:

  1. Open Discord and head over to User settings
  2. In the “App Settings”, Select ‘Voice & Video Tab’

  1. In the voice settings, check if the right input and output device is selected. If the error still persists, try changing the audio input and output device to all the available options. Furthermore, please ensure that the input volume and output volume are not set at a minimal level. You can also test the mic and its playback by clicking on the ‘Let’s Check’ button.
  2. If the issue is not rectified using the above steps, scroll down to the bottom and click on ‘Reset Voice Settings’ to reset the audio settings to default. This will revert all the changes you’ve made during the process.

Fix 4: Check Audio Settings on Computer

If the audio sharing issue still persists, there could be an audio output setting issue impacting recording. To further troubleshoot this issue, check your computer’s Audio Settings following these steps:

  1. Press Windows Key + S, and search for “Microphone Privacy Settings”. Open the best match result on top of the search bar.
  2. Once the settings window pops up, head over to the second option ‘Allow apps to access your microphone’ and ensure the access is turned on. If the access is turned off, turn it on so that the Discord can access your microphone input.
  3. Now scroll to the bottom and find the option ‘Allow desktop apps to access your microphone’, and make sure that it is turned on to allow access of microphone to Discord.

4. Once the settings have been saves, restart your computer and try relaunching Discord screen sharing to see if this fix has resolved the issue.

Fix 5: Update your Audio Drivers:

The Discord voice stream error message can occur if outdated or non compatible audio drivers are in place on the computer. You can manually update your drivers by following these steps. On Windows, please visit your Device Manager and update them using the Update Driver option.

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Windows Run Dialog box and type in “devmgmt.msc” and press Enter.
  2. This will open Windows Device Manager. Expand ‘Sound, video, and game controllers.

3. Click on each device type and select the ‘Driver’ tab. Click on Update Driver to update the drivers. Once the drivers have been updated, restart your PC. Hopefully, by now, no sound from the discord issue should be fixed.

Fix 6: Allow Administrative Access to Discord:

Discord is known to not output audio via 3rd party applications like Skype. When trying to share your screen while using the Discord program, connect with your co-worker/friend in either Skype or whichever app you are more familiar and try sharing videos that work properly before annoying each other with all of your twitter rants and youtube vids!

  1. Press Windows Key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the Discord installation folder.
  3. Once you’re in the Discord installation folder, locate Discord.exe, right-click on it and choose ‘Run as Administrator’.

Fix 7: Delete Discord Roaming Data:

If you’re having trouble getting sound while trying to show someone how awesome a game of yours is because they have to watch you via your online game sharing platform of choice (ahem, Discord), then it’s likely due to temporary data or settings in the Discord app that’s causing the issue and possibly resulting in an all-out lack of audio on both ends. To remedy this, try clearing any temp files saved by the Discord app, restarting your computer/phone as well, and reapplying some settings/permissions for the app. Doing so may also be able to fix any issues related to getting sound from videos being played in a separate application altogether on Discord like VLC player for example.

  1. Close Discord completely by right clicking Discord icon in System Tray and clicking ‘Exit Discord’.
  2. Press Windows Key + R. In the Run dialog box, type %appdata% and hit the Enter key.

3. Locate Discord folder and delete the folder. Restart the app to identify if the issue has been resolved.

Fix 8: Temporarily disable the antivirus protection:

Streaming and related functions like screen sharing might not be available depending on your version of antivirus, but you can manually disable the particular service for a short period. If this fixes your problem then consider uninstalling or otherwise getting help with that security software – it’s probably causing conflicts with Discord.

However, you should not do or click on anything that will cause your computer to malfunction. When your antivirus protection is disabled, you are without the safety net that prevents your PC from getting infected with harmful software so it’s important to refrain from doing or clicking anything that could cause this to happen.

Fix 9: Try streaming without full-windowed screen:

When attempting to use the full screen option, most likely there is an issue with permissions, your system not granting access to Discord or any other graphics card fluctuation. We recommend comparing screen sharing on Discord when minimized so as to diagnose and hopefully repair the current issue.

Fix 10: Reinstall Discord:

If you have tried the aforementioned tips and the Discord sharing channel is still causing problems, then perhaps it has something to do with the compatibility of your Discord program. In this case, you will need to completely delete your Discord application and then reinstall it so that it becomes compatible with other common applications such as Google Hangouts and Skype.

  1. Press Windows + R key to open Windows Run dialog box.
  2. Type in Appwiz.cpl in the dialog box and hit Enter. This will open the Windows Add/Remove Programs utility.
  3. Find the Discord app in the utility, right-click on it, and uninstall the app.
  4. Go to Discord and download the latest version.
  5. Open the downloaded file and install Discord as per the on-screen instructions.
  6. Launch Discord to test if the sound error has been fixed.

All being well, by now, this should have fixed the Discord Screen Share No Audio problem on your computer. If you would like to add a suggestion, please contact us and we will be more than willing to review it and get back to you as soon as possible.

FAQs

How can I fix the video and audio delay when I’m trying to use Discord to share my screen with someone?

The delay might be due to poor internet connections. You should try getting a faster ISP if you aren’t already with one, or you can also use an ethernet cable for better internet connection.

While we’ve rolled out all of the necessary pieces to make this feature fully feasible in all regions, please be patient and allow us a little more time to finish rolling it out across the world. We will stay committed to releasing Discord Screen Share to as many users as possible, but obviously there may be some limitations with how quickly that can be accomplished. Thanks for understanding!

How are you supposed to screen share on Discord? It’s really easy. Just open the Discord app and join a voice channel or a video call, and then tap the “Screen Share” button from the control bar. You’ll be able to share your screen as long as you have access. If there’s no “Join Screen Share” option when you click on someone’s name, this means this feature isn’t available in your area yet. We hope that changes soon!
